Quebec’s independent police watchdog (BEI) has launched an investigation into a Montreal police (SPVM) intervention that occurred early Friday morning in the city’s Saint-Michel neighbourhood.

According to authorities, a 911 call came in at around 12:40 a.m. reporting that a person was causing a disturbance.

The SPVM arrived on the scene at 12:47 a.m. and found the individual armed. The person reportedly pointed the firearm at the police. At around 1:05 a.m., the police allegedly opened fire in the person’s direction.

CTV News has learned that a woman was injured during the shooting, which occurred at the corner of Saint-Michel Boulevard and Sauvé Street.

According to the BEI, SPVM officers administered first aid at the scene before the woman was transported to hospital. She is in stable condition.

Seven BEI investigators have been assigned to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident. Provincial police (SQ) have also been called to provide support.

A separate criminal investigation into the events that led to the police intervention has also been entrusted to the SQ.

The investigation is ongoing.
