“How She Dares” is a new documentary film by and for women immigrant entrepreneurs overcoming barriers and getting down to business.
Filmed over seven years, the story follows Vietnamese-Canadian engineer turned business coach Zoonie Nguyen on her journey from war refugee to corporate leader and advocate for women entrepreneurs.
“I found my voice, I felt like I can go out and help other women find their voice,” she said. “When you start a business, you’re really on your own. You have no resources, no support around you, so you need to find that strong voice.”
In the documentary, her voice is joined by others who are making their way forward as entrepreneurs.
“Who wanted to learn skills? Who wanted to learn how to make a business plan?” said Nguyen. “I had the chance to teach them that because I had to go through that myself.”
Dina Merhbi is also one of those who dared to run her own business and write a book. She knows women can be perceived differently in that role.
“He was a leader, but I was bossy. He was outspoken, I was loud,” explained Merhbi.
She said having help makes the difference getting started.
“It’s very important to have a community of help,” said Merhbi. “At first, I was working more with companies and clinics, but then when I ventured really creating my online business and having the movement that I wanted to create through my book reconnect, I was like, I need to go networking. I need to meet people.”
Both women will be at the premier of the film on Saturday at HEC Monreal.
