Man, 47, in hospital after armed attack in a Montreal store

The condition of the 47-year-old man who was attacked Saturday afternoon inside a Montreal business has stabilized.

The assault occurred in a business on Notre-Dame Street, near Dickson Street, in the Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve borough.

The victim was in critical condition when taken to hospital, but stabilized following surgery.

Montreal police (SPVM) arrested a 25-year-old man in connection with the case.

The police had initially identified him as an “important witness” after he presented himself at a Montreal hospital with a non-life-threatening upper-body injury. He was eventually placed under arrest.

Police arrived at the scene of the assault shortly after 2:35 p.m.

They discovered the man with upper-body injuries caused by a possibly sharp object, said SPVM spokesman Jean-Pierre Brabant.

According to initial information, an argument had degenerated between several people inside the business. That’s when the victim was allegedly assaulted.

The suspect had left the premises before police arrived.

A security perimeter was set up inside the business, while investigators and forensic identification technicians went to the scene to try to shed light on the events. Witnesses were also to be interviewed and surveillance cameras viewed.
