State of emergency remains for Chatsworth as other municipalities also deal with flooding

CTV Kitchener: State of emergency A state of emergency in Chatsworth. Nadia Matos reports on how many people have been evacuated from their homes.

Flooding continues across a large area of southern and midwestern Ontario Saturday.

The communities of Williamsford and McCullough Lake in Chatsworth Township are still under a state of emergency.

The mayor of the municipality announced the emergency Friday after homes were evacuated and Highway 6, running through Williamsford, was closed after the Saugeen River spilled its banks. It remains closed.

At least eight homes have been evacuated as a precaution and there is word Saturday that some cottages in the area may also have to be evacuated.

The Saugeen Valley Conservation Authority issued a statement Saturday stating a private dam located at the highway bridge is partially obstructed by debris, which has reduced the capacity through the spillways, and in combination with the high flows, has resulted in flow over the roadway.

The SVCA says the Teeswater River upstream of Paisley is still slowly rising and has not yet peaked.

There are more closures in the region due to widespread flooding. The Blackbridge Rd. in Cambridge and the low level bridge in St. Jacobs will be closed this weekend.

In Chatham, water levels on the Thames River are still elevated and have spilled over in some cases.

Last week, the Lower Thames Conservation Authority said it was difficult to predict how high the Thames River may rise in the city.

But it did say some downtown sidewalks in Chatham along the river are expected to remain flooded into next week.
