A man from Chatham is facing a criminal harassment charge after Guelph Police Service said he repeatedly called a Guelph woman he found on social media.

The woman told police she had received approximately 80 calls from a man she didn’t know. After declining many call attempts, she said she answered the phone but did not speak. She told police the caller threatened to go to her house and hurt her.

Officers called the man who told them he was a student in Windsor and gave them a fake address.

An 18-year-old man from Chatham went to the police station on Thursday and was arrested for criminal harassment, uttering threats and obstructing police.

Investigators said the man and the woman did not know each other and the man found the victim’s phone number on social media.
