Ontario was digging out Wednesday after a big winter storm swept across the province.
People were rushing to clear roads, parking lots, driveways and sidewalks before the weekend when another 10 cm to 15 cm of snow was expected to hit the region.
For Kitchener resident Stewart, snow removal is all about attitude.
“I’ve no plans today. But I’m not complaining. I like the snow.”
He was also practicing good form.
“Use your legs,” Stewart advised. “Watch your back and just a bit at a time.”
Others weren’t prepared for so much hard work.
“Time to invest in a snow blower like my neighbours,” said Mike, another Kitchener resident.
The city said the main roads were plowed first, while some smaller residential streets were delayed until later in the day.
“Last night’s event was the largest event we’ve had this year for total accumulation,” said David Pressey, the Region of Waterloo’s manager of transportation operations.
The storm made it a long night for road crews.
“Staff stayed on until 3 a.m., until they made a shift change,” said Pressey. “We had 24-hours straight through the night to keep the roads clean and clear.”
Residents were asked to be patient as the plows worked their way through the region.
“If you see a plow on the road, give us space and time to allow that operator to do its job safely and effective,” Pressey advised.
He also praised their dedication to the job.
“[They are] hardworking, dedicated staff who love the job and they love the region. When storms like this come into the region, they love the opportunity to display their skills.”
The region issued its first-ever Significant Weather Event on Wednesday, part of a new communications strategy to keep residents informed.
“The intention is to really drive home the importance of staying off the road,” Pressey explained. “It is not safe to travel. Roads may not be as clear as you’re used to seeing roads being clear.”
The City of Cambridge said its on-street parking ban would end at 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, while the City of Kitchener extended its ban until 9 p.m. on Friday.
