TORONTO - The union representing employees at Zellers is worried about the future of retail employees in Canada with a shrinking number of Canadian retail chains.
The United Food and Commercial Workers Union says American companies setting up shop in Canada offer no job security and low wages.
Hudson's Bay announced Thursday that it would be closing most of the 64 locations not being taken over by U.S. retailer Target.
The Bay says it's no longer viable to operate under the Zellers' banner and most remaining stores will close by March.
Ontario has the largest number of stores slated for potential closure at 29, followed by 15 in Quebec.
There are four each in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, three each in Alberta, B.C. and Saskatchewan, two in Manitoba and one in P.E.I.
Target has said that Zellers employees would be encouraged to apply for jobs at their stores, but a Zellers employees' union says it hasn't hired many.
Kevin Shimmin of the Food and Commercial Workers union says by the end of the year there will be likely more than 10,000 Zellers employees in all who are out of a job.
