It was a hard-fought battle as the Kitchener Rangers and Windsor Spitfires met for one last bout in their Ontario Hockey League playoff series.
Ahead of the all-important Game 7, Rangers fans gathered in Kitchener and climbed aboard a bus bound for the Windsor Family Credit Union Centre to ensure the boys in blue had some KW spirit in the stands.
When it came time to hit the ice, Luke Ellinas, the hero of Game 4, drew first blood with a goal in the first period.
Things were looking promising for the Rangers until midway through the second period when Windsor’s Carter Hicks got some payback with a goal of his own.
For the first time in the series, the game went into sudden death overtime to decide a winner.
After several solid chances from both sides, it was Ellinas who finally netted the golden goal with just over five and a half minutes remaining, securing the 2 – 1 win.
This is the first time in the team’s history they have come back from a 3 – 0 series deficit.
The Rangers now set their sights on the London Knights for the Western Conference final. The Knights have not yet lost a game in the post-season.
Game 1 is set for Friday, April 25 in London.
