Filming to shut down parts of Cambridge next week

Crews have been busy building a wooden structure for an upcoming production in downtown Galt.

An unusual construction project is underway in Cambridge.

A wooden structure has been set up at Queen’s Square in downtown Galt. It has a wide set of stairs and ropes hanging down from posts on the platform.

Crews began building it earlier this week for a production being called “The Light.”

Rumors are flying that the structure is actually a set piece for the upcoming season “The Handmaid’s Tale.” The television show has a long history of filming in Cambridge and, as the structure looks similar to gallows, it would fit the theme of the dystopian series.

It is common practice in the film industry to use code names during production and filming.

The City of Cambridge said filming is set to start on Monday. Residents should expect to see lighting cranes, drones, pyrotechnics, electronic gunfire and large crowd scenes at Queen’s Square.

The area will be closed until Feb. 1 and, as a result, drivers should expect intermittent traffic control measures.

Crews will also be filming at Mill Race Park and 14 Landsdowne Road North.
