Oilers sign defenceman Murphy to 5-year deal worth $4.1M per season

Defenceman Connor Murphy has re-signed with the Edmonton Oilers for $20 million over five years.

The Edmonton Oilers have retained another pending unrestricted free agent.

The National Hockey League team announced Monday morning it has signed defenceman Connor Murphy to a five-year contract worth $4.1-million per season.

The Oilers acquired Murphy from the Chicago Blackhawks at the NHL trade deadline in March for a second-round draft pick in 2028. The 33-year-old right-shot defenceman was due to become a free agent on July 1.

The move comes a day after the Oilers re-signed centre Jason Dickinson to a similar deal: a five-year pact worth $4 million per season. Like Murphy, the Oilers also acquired Dickinson from the Blackhawks at the trade deadline.

The six-foot-four, 291-lb. Murphy, a native of Boston, played 20 regular-season games with the Oilers last season, scoring one goal and three assists, and tallied two goals and an assist in six playoff games.

The first-round pick of the Phoenix Coyotes in 2011 has played 825 games over his 13 seasons in the NHL, nine of them with the Blackhawks.

Six players on the Oilers’ roster at the end of the season are unrestricted free agent: goalie Connor Ingram and forwards Adam Henrique, Max Jones, Kasperi Kapanen, Curtis Lazar and Jack Roslovic. Defenceman Spencer Stastney and forward Colten Dach are restricted free agents.
