RCMP received reports that an adult had been kidnapped at gunpoint near Highway 16A and Range Road 81 on Sunday.
Multiple detachments were called to help search. When the vehicle was found and RCMP tried to stop it, officers said the driver sped away despite poor road conditions.
Due to the threat of danger to the victim, officers followed and were able to stop the vehicle.
The victim was rescued, but the driver ran away.
A shelter-in-place was ordered while officers searched, and the man was later found in a rural residential area north of Range Road 150.
RCMP said he tried to break into a home, but was confronted by the homeowner and ran into the woods before eventually surrendering to police.
The 50-year-old Onoway man has been charged with forcible confinement, flight from police, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, resisting/obstructing a police officer and mischief under $5,000.
He is expected at the Alberta Court of Justice in Stony Plain on Wednesday.
