An individual is dead as a result of a fire that destroyed a hotel in Bashaw, Alberta early Sunday.

RCMP and firefighters responded to a report of a fire at about 1:15 a.m. at the Bashaw Motor Inn located in the area of 44 Avenue and 55 Street.

After searching through the debris caused by the fire, RCMP found the remains of one person. The victim has not been identified due to a broken water main that prevented officers from recovering the body.

An autopsy is scheduled for this week to identify the person and determine the cause of death.

One of the three people airlifted to an Edmonton hospital via STARS Sunday has been released, and the other two are still in serious condition.

RCMP Major Crimes Unit is assisting the investigation.

“The RCMP is taking the precaution of considering this to be a crime scene until proven otherwise,” they said in a press release. “At this time, the RCMP will not speculate on how the fire may have started, or any of the evidence they may have collected thus far.”

RCMP will release more details tomorrow.

Bashaw is 135 kilometres southeast of Edmonton.
