The City of Edmonton says a fake letter claiming to be from the mayor and city councillors is circulating, warning pet owners about licences, excessive barking and animal neglect complaints.

“Be mindful of messaging from the City of Edmonton,” the city says. “Bylaw enforcement is handled by city bylaw officers, not elected officials.”

The letter claims the city is working with vet clinics and police to ensure all pets have licences, claiming 128 $250 tickets have been issued this year.

The letter also claims owners will be fined for barking and neglect offences and that animals could be seized.

The city says the most accurate bylaw information is available on its website or by calling 311.
