MURRAY HARBOUR, P.E.I. -- Conservation groups spent the weekend gathering up enough marine garbage from the shores of five pristine islands off eastern Prince Edward Island to fill a dumpster truck and a pickup truck.
The clean-up of the islands off Murray Harbour was led by the Nature Conservancy of Canada, which partnered with the Island Nature Trust and the Southeast Environmental Association.
A spokesman for the Nature Conservancy of Canada says 33 volunteers in kayaks and a canoe paddled ten kilometres to access Cherry, Thomas, Gordon, Herring and Reynolds Islands.
They filled hundreds of garbage bags with marine litter, including hundreds of buoys and three tires.
The Nature Conservancy of Canada says it organized the event because marine garbage poses a threat to wildlife from ingestion and entanglement.
The Murray Harbour Islands are an important foraging grounds for harbour seals, bald eagles and great blue herons.
