KASHECHEWAN, Ont. - Officials of the Kashechewan First Nation have rescinded an evacuation order put in place earlier this month because of potential flooding.
They say in a statement the decision came after elders surveyed river ice from the air Monday and determined the danger had passed.
More 400 residents of the remote James Bay reserve were airlifted out after the province said flooding could be caused by ice jams on the Albany River.
Residents who were deemed vulnerable -- children, seniors and people with medical conditions -- were taken to Kapuskasing and Thunder Bay.
The Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management co-ordinated the evacuation, with help from local First Nations and the Ministry of National Resources.
