The City of Calgary says now that the snow has stopped, crews will be switching into a different strategy to keep roads and sidewalks safe.
The city started on its priority snow plan at 10 p.m. on Tuesday when the snow stopped.
"This means for the next 18 hours we will be working to complete maintenance (plowing through lanes, applying material) on our major routes (over 20,000 daily trips – i.e. Crowchild, Glenmore)," said city spokesperson Chris McGeachy in a statement.
"We also clear a number of pieces of pedestrian infrastructure such as pedestrian overpasses, city-owned sidewalks, designated pathways and some high priority bus pads."
He said crews will also be paying special attention to hills, bridge decks and intersections, which are all considered trouble spots where ice can form.
Snow and ice clearing isn't just up to the city, he noted, as residents have their own responsibilities when it comes to their own properties.
"Per Bylaw 20M88, sidewalks should be cleared 24 hours after snowfall ends," McGeachy said.
"The city clears all city-owned sidewalks (those next to city-owned property, like City Hall) within 24 hours, and property owners are responsible for the sidewalk next to their house/business."
There is a little bit of good news as Calgarians bundle up and grab their shovels – the city says there won't be a snow route parking ban in effect for this most recent storm.
As the city works to clear roads and highways of snow and ice, drivers are reminded to always drive to conditions.
"Snow covered roads, ice and visibility can be a factor in your commute. Prepare yourself before you head out, leave plenty of time to get to where you need to go and adapt to the changing weather," he said.
Calgary police say they were called to 64 crashes between 5 p.m. Tuesday and 4 a.m. Wednesday. Ten of those collisions involved injuries.
