The province announced Friday that it’s investing $30 million towards a campus redevelopment at the Southern Institute of Technology (SAIT) in northwest Calgary.
The money will go towards the Taylor Family Campus Centre, which is currently under construction.
The $150 million facility is set to open in 2027, and will include an athletics and recreation centre, with an arena and triple gymnasium, along with health and studying spaces.
David Ross, SAIT’s president and CEO, said the building will combine learning, health and community.
“It will offer services that will go beyond the classroom,” Ross said, “as you’ve heard already integrated health clinics providing comprehensive care from dental to vision to pharmacy, mental health support, sports medicine.”
The announcement comes as the union representing school staff says 28 and a half full-time positions were cut by SAIT.
AUPE alleges that the laid-off staff were escorted off the premises without getting to say goodbye. They described the funding announcement as a “slap in the face” for workers who just lost their jobs.
