Liberal Party of Canada supporters gathered at Jameson’s Pub in Brentwood to watch the leadership results.
The room erupted in applause and cheers as Mark Carney was announced as the new leader of the Liberal party as well as the new Prime Minister of Canada.
He won on the first ballot with 85.9% of the vote.
Those inside Jameson’s Pub believe Carney has what it takes to face the challenges confronting Canada and Canadians.
“I think it’s his resume. He has helped two world economies through crisis and this crisis we’re on right now; I think he’s the man for the job,” says Austin Morris.
“I really like his policies. I really like his inclusivity and the things he’s fighting for and the stance he’s taking against Trump and his tariffs,” says Savannah Aburto.
“He’s got experience with money; he’s got international experience and he’s known somewhat in several parts of the world. He’s got a lot of the right stuff,” says Charles Moore.
“I thought it was really good for Canada that it was a strong plurality in who was chosen to lead because that shows a broad level of support coming into the election and facing off with Trump,” says Macbeath Royal.
The Calgary Chamber of Commerce also congratulated Carney on becoming Canada’s next Prime Minister.
“As you take office, we encourage you to prioritize a competitive, prosperous and productive Canadian economy – one that benefits all sectors, all regions and all Canadians,” says Deborah Yedlin, President and CEO of the Calgary Chamber of Commerce.
“Canada is at a critical moment in time, facing tectonic changes in the global economy, shifting geopolitical dynamics and a both evolving and uncertain relationship with our largest trading partner.”
Chrystia Freeland finished second with 8 per cent of the vote, Karina Gould was third and Frank Baylis finished fourth.
