(Note: CTV News has opted not to repost the video in full.) A Calgary man accused of threatening Prime Minister Mark Carney’s life in a YouTube video will remain in custody. Jamie Da Costa, 31, was ordered detained earlier this month, defence lawyer Adriano Iovinelli noted during a court appearance on Tuesday. As of Tuesday morning, Da Costa was still in custody at the Calgary Remand Centre. Da Costa is charged with “uttering a threat to Prime Minister of Canada Mark Carney to cause death contrary to Section 264.1(1)(a) of the Criminal Code.” RCMP said earlier on Tuesday morning that on July 28, they “received information that a YouTube account had posted threats to kill Prime Minister Mark Carney.” Court documents say the alleged incident occurred between July 25 and 26. A video appearing to encourage Canadians to travel to Ottawa and commit an act of violence against Canada’s leader is still posted on a YouTube channel registered to a Jamie Da Costa. The video also appears to encourage violence against members of the prime minister’s family. The video is dated July 25. (Note: CTV News has opted not to repost the video in full.) Da Costa also faces a number of other charges not related to the alleged incident involving Carney. Those matters involved charges of extortion, criminal harassment, uttering threats to cause death, mischief (damage over $5,000) and being disguised with intent. The first three charges stem from alleged incidents between Oct. 12, 2025, and July 28 of this year. The fourth and fifth charges stem from alleged incidents on July 10. These charges have been working their way through the court system alongside the alleged incident involving Carney. “One information, special prosecution has conduct of that, just because the complainant is the prime minister, Mark Carney,” Iovinelli said. “I don’t know if special prosecution is going to take conduct of both. On the last date, there was an indication that the answer is yes.” All of Da Costa’s matters before the court were adjourned to Friday.
