Alberta Sheriffs have cracked down on a problem property in Medicine Hat, saying police were frequently called to the spot over complaints about drug activity.
The Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods unit (SCAN) was granted a court order against the owner of 48 Cameron Way S.E., banning specific people from residing at the home for two years.
The court order also forces the home’s detached garage to be closed for 90 days starting on Feb. 20.
The garage will be boarded up and fenced off, and all the locks will be changed, preventing anyone from going inside until the order expires on May 21.
Police attended the property – which is in the vicinity of two schools and a daycare – 18 times since April 23, 2023.
“Let this closure be a message to all drug dealers in the province: You are not welcome here,” said Mike Ellis, minister of public safety and emergency services, in a news release.
“I urge all Albertans to continue reporting suspicious activity in their area.”
Since its inception in 2008, the SCAN unit has investigated more than 10,000 properties and has issued 130 community safety orders.
