11 stolen bikes worth $70K recovered from suspected Calgary chop shop: police

Calgary police have recovered 11 high-end bicycles worth approximately $70,000 as part of an investigation into a suspected chop shop.

The online stolen property team launched an investigation earlier this month after officers became aware of a man believed to be selling a stolen bicycle.

Police said the bike was believed to have been stolen during a September 2024 break-and-enter in a downtown apartment complex.

The bike was registered with Bike Index and was flagged as stolen on the program’s website.

On Jan. 8, officers recovered the bike and returned it to its rightful owner.

A 27-year-old Calgary man was charged with possession of stolen property over $5,000 and trafficking stolen property.

He is scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 24.

As the investigation continued, officers searched a home in the 100 block of Manora Hill N.E. on Jan. 23, related to a suspected bicycle chop shop.

Police seized 11 high-end bicycles, two replica firearms, ammunition and approximately 18 grams of methamphetamine.

As a result of that search, a 64-year-old Calgary man was charged with six offences, including possession of stolen property over $5,000, possession of a controlled substance and possession of a prohibited weapon.

He is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.

Calgary police are hoping to return the stolen bikes to their rightful owners.

“Visit our Facebook page for an album showcasing the bikes. If you believe you are the rightful owner of a bike, email [e-mail],” police said in a Thursday news release.

If you find a bike, you can report it on the Calgary Police Service bike recovery website. Calgarians are also encouraged to register their bikes with Bike Index for free.
