January is in full swing and snow is in the forecast, according to Environment Canada.
As winter tightens its grip and snow continues to blanket the region, Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are urging drivers to stay informed about road safety regulations involving snow plows.
Illegal to pass working snow plows:
A law passed in September 2023 making it illegal to pass snow plows working in echelon formation on roads with a speed limit of 80 kilometres or higher. Drivers can only pass if the lane is completely clear of the plow and its blade.
Fines and penalties:
According to OPP, illegal passing can lead to fines ranging from $150 to $1,000. Other potential charges may include:
-Stunt-driving, careless-driving, dangerous-driving, and penalties involving license suspension or vehicle impoundment.
Tips for winter driving from the OPP:
-Equip your car with winter tires, functioning defrosters, and quality wipers with -30 Celsius washer fluid.
-Keep all vehicle lights on for visibility.
-Check road conditions through apps or Ontario 511 before traveling.
-Dress warmly in case of emergencies.
“If conditions exceed your driving ability, consider staying home or arranging alternative transportation,” stated police.
