Wasaga Beach clears way for new era with beachfront overhaul

Demolition continues along Wasaga’s iconic beachfront.

Crews are continuing demolition work along Beach Area One this week as Wasaga Beach begins one of the most significant redevelopment projects in its history, a transformation that will see new homes and businesses built where some of the town’s most familiar structures once stood.

The work is part of a broader plan to revitalize the beachfront between First and Third Streets. Once complete, the area will feature 150 residential units and over 30 commercial spaces. For many residents and long-time visitors, the changes are stirring mixed emotions.

Among the buildings slated for demolition is the iconic Dard, a well-known fixture in the area for decades. Roy Mar Construction is overseeing the demolition and cleanup, with the current focus on removing the debris and clearing the foundations of buildings that have already come down.

Mayor Brian Smith called the transformation bittersweet, but necessary, describing the redevelopment as a step toward a more vibrant and sustainable future for the town.

“I see those buildings going down there’s a lot of great memories there as a kid and its sad,” Smith said. “But I know we’ve got to move forward. Where we have been for the past 20-25 years is not a good place.”

The mayor also confirmed the tender process for work on Beach Drive recently closed and is now under review.

Despite the uncertainty, Smith remain optimistic the project will ultimately position the town as a first-class destination for both tourists and the community.

The demolition team anticipates completing the remaining tear down within the next two weeks.
