Provincial police say a grenade was found at a residence in Bobcaygeon Wednesday, which prompted a hold and secure of a local elementary school and a temporary evacuation of the immediate area on Wednesday.
Ontario Provincial Police Acting Sgt. Jake Daynes posted a video to social media with few details Wednesday evening, stating officers were dispatched to a residence on Hillview Drive for a dispute.
“Upon officers arriving they were informed of an alleged weapon that was possibly involved in this dispute,” Daynes stated.
On Thursday, police confirmed the weapon was a historical wartime grenade that was safely disposed of by military members.
“OPP Explosive Disposal Unit (EDU) was contacted, who in turn consulted with the Department of National Defence,” OPP stated in a release.
Police say “other weaponry” was also discovered, but they did not elaborate.
Once police confirmed the situation was isolated to one residence, the hold and secure was lifted and residents were allowed to return to their homes.
It’s unclear how many people were in the home or if any arrests were made. Police say no injuries were reported.
“OPP want to remind community members that if ever in a similar situation where weapons or explosives are located, do not attempt to dispose of them yourself. Contact the OPP immediately, move to a safe location and ensure that no one else gets close. EDU members are trained in the safe handling and disposal of explosives to ensure public safety,” the release continued.
