Motorists and transit riders in Barrie should prepare for a full road closure in the city’s south end. A section of Mapleview Drive East will be closed over several days as Metrolinx and its sub-contractors carry out work unrelated to the city’s ongoing reconstruction project.

The closure will begin at 9 a.m. Friday and remain in place until 5 a.m. Monday. During that time, no through traffic will be permitted between Yonge Street and Prince William Way.

Temporary detour routes will be in place for motorists to navigate around the closure. Those travelling north on Yonge Street or east on Mapleview Drive will be rerouted to take Yonge Street to Big Bay Point Road and then north on Prince William Way. Southbound drivers on Yonge Street or westbound on Mapleview will be redirected via Yonge Street to Lockhart Road, then north on 20th Sideroad to return to Mapleview Drive East.

Public transit is also impacted by the closure, with a detour in place for Route 12 starting at 9 p.m. Friday through to the end of service on Sunday. Regular service is expected to resume Monday morning. Transit users are encouraged to plan ahead and check for service updates online.

The City advises residents to allow for extra travel time and follow posted detour signs. While the temporary closure may cause delays over the weekend, Metrolinx says it is necessary to support infrastructure work in the area.
