Costco could soon be coming to the beach.
While shovels have yet to hit the ground, rumours swirling around Wasaga Beach may have some truth to them.
In a statement to CTV News, Wasaga Beach Mayor Brian Smith says “While town staff are excited to continue working through the development approvals process with the applicant, it is still premature to make any formal announcements about this project. Costco continues to conduct its due diligence, and the town continues to assist them in this process.”
In June of last year, Mayor Smith said representatives from a large retailer and the owner of the lands at Lyons Court and Ramblewood Drive. And, “application for pre-consultation has been submitted to the town, and town staff are working through the development approvals process with the applicant.”
While details are scarce, a site plan approval application was sent to the Town of Wasaga Beach December 17.
According to documents, Humphries Planning Group (HPG) is the planning consultant for Kelowna Valley Developments Ltd. the registered owner of the lands on Lyons Court in Wasaga Beach.
The site plan reads, “Kelowna has entered into an agreement with Costco Wholesale to develop the subject lands with a Costco Warehouse Membership Facility and a Gas Bar.”
Transportation, stormwater, site alteration studies performed by Tatham Engineering Ltd. were sent to Wasaga Beach in December.

Little more information is available, however, the Mayor understands the thrill of contemplating a large retailer in the beach-side town.
“Council understands the tremendous level of excitement and public interest in this project,” said Smith.
