OTTAWA - The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has issued an alert about raw mussels harvested in British Columbia that may contain paralytic shellfish toxins.
The mussels were harvested between Oct. 2 and Oct. 14 in B.C.'s Okeover inlet and sold in 10 and 20 lb. packages.
They were processed by Aquatec Seafoods, Ltd., Taylor Shellfish Canada, Fanny Bay Oysters and Union Bay, and were distributed in B.C., Alberta, Manitoba and possibly elsewhere.
The agency says the affected product has been recalled, and there have been no reported cases of Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP) linked to the mussels.
Symptoms of PSP include tingling and numbness of the lips, tongue, hands and feet, and difficulty swallowing.
In severe situations, this can proceed to difficulty walking, muscle paralysis, respiratory paralysis and death in just 12 hours.
