A woman from Yarmouth, N.S., went viral when her TikTok take on the Canadian response to Donald Trump’s tariffs appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live!
Keltie Bain, a travel agent, bartender and content creator, said she woke up to hear her voice had carried to California before the popular late night talk show host shared it with his audience.
“The original video I took was just in our local NSLC liquor stores about how the Canadians were taking the American alcohol off the shelf,” Bain said. “So the video was just scanning some of the empty shelves.”
Bain said her content varies but politics have been a hot topic lately.
“And then the ‘elbows up’ has become a big national slogan at this point,” Bain said. She included the hockey reference in her video after Justin Trudeau used it during his final speech as prime minister. It’s been adopted by Canadians as a way to express resolve and unity during the trade war.
Bain said Kimmel did a good job of keeping things light.
“It was quite funny,” she said. “He was saying how the Canadians every time they took a bottle off had to say, ‘I’m sorry, I’m sorry.’”
Bain has partnered with another local creator to capitalize on the exposure.
“We sort of merged up and we started the elbows up merch that you can purchase,” Bain said.
It all happened in what Bain called a “crazy 48 hours” but she said it’s united Canadians for the first time in a long time.
“We’ll just support each other as we probably should have been doing all along but this has just really highlighted the importance of it.”
