The search for a child who fell into the water while fishing in Cooks Cove, N.S., has been suspended.

Nova Scotia RCMP said emergency crews were called Thursday around 1:40 p.m. Police said it was reported that a child fell into the water while fishing with a man and another child.

Police said the man immediately went into the water to search for the child but was unsuccessful.

RCMP said the search was suspended Saturday at 5 p.m.

“There is no information to suggest that the child got out of the water safely and the extensive search efforts have not resulted in information that would enable searchers to identify a specific search location for the child’s remains,” read a news release Sunday.

Over the weekend more than 13 agencies were involved in the search, including several ground search and rescue teams, multiple fire agencies, and the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre. Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Nova Scotia’s Department of Natural Resources and Renewables Air Services, and the Civil Air Search and Rescue Association were also involved.

Police said the child’s family has been kept updated on the search efforts, and RCMP’s victim services is engaged.

“Our thoughts are with the child’s loved ones and the community at this difficult time,” read the release.

No identifying details about the child have been released by police.

Cooks Cove is located in Guysborough County, roughly 43 kilometres west of Canso, N.S.
