A Nova Scotia man is facing charges after allegedly stealing from a construction site and driving dangerously away from police.
RCMP said officers responded to a break and enter at a residential construction site on Abbey Road in Windsor on Jan. 4 around 9:15 a.m. Police said someone driving a Chevrolet Aveo was seen leaving the area with stolen tools worth approximately $5,000.
Police said investigators identified a suspect on the day of the theft, and over the next few weeks attempted to arrest him.
Initially, officers were able to link the vehicle to a house on Glooscap First Nation. RCMP said a traffic stop was attempted when two people were seen speeding away in the vehicle, but the driver didn’t pull over.
Officers later tried to pull the driver over again on Highway 1. The vehicle was found abandoned in a ditch along West Brooklyn Mountain Road shortly after.
“On two occasions, his vehicle fled from police in a dangerous manner and officers did not pursue it in the interest of public safety,” said Cpl. Travis MacDonald in a news release.
Police said officers were able to follow two sets of footprints from the crash site and were able to locate and arrest one of the vehicle’s occupants.
Morgan Cynthia Hennigar, 26, of Halifax, was charged with obstructing a peace officer and failure to comply with an order.
On Jan. 27, police arrested a second person. Michael Jody James Paul, 27, is facing several charges, including:
-break and enter and theft
-flight from a peace officer
-dangerous operation of a conveyance
-operation while prohibited
-seven counts of failure to comply with order
Paul was scheduled to appear in Windsor court Wednesday.
“Investigators organized an operation involving surveillance and RCMP Police Dog Services, which resulted in Paul being safety arrested,” said MacDonald.
