Nova Scotia is launching its first internal travel nurse program to deploy teams to emergency departments across the province.
The program, which is expected to start at the end of March, will hire 20-to-30 fulltime registered nurses, according to a news release from the government. Applications are now open.
“Since before the pandemic, nurses’ unions have been calling on the Province to reduce its reliance on agency nurses,” said Janet Hazelton, president of the Nova Scotia Nurses’ Union, in the release. “This announcement is a step in the right direction, one that provides structure, support and stability for those interested in working in this area of nursing and for Nova Scotians who require care.”
Nurses in the program will have $6 per hour or 15 per cent – whichever amount is higher – added to their registered nurse base hourly rate for all travel shifts.
