The City of Moncton issued building permits with a combined valued of $198.6 million in the first three months of 2025, which is more than triple the amount from the same stretch last year.
A total of 209 permits were issued between Jan. 1 and March 31, according to a news release from the city.
Some of the major projects include:
- $112.1 million for a Phase 2 permit for the Atlantic Science Enterprise Centre at 343 Université Ave., which will have new office spaces and labs
- $17.3 million for a 143-unit apartment building at 280 Millennium Blvd.
- $11 million for a 77-unit apartment building at 30 Waterloo St.
- $5.6 million for a cross-dock and office expansion for Manitoulin Transport at 200 Babineau Blvd.
- $1.8 million for a self-storage warehouse at 15 Loustouk St.

“Demand is driven by the market and the market might adjust itself over time, but as of right now with our strong population growth that we’ve seen in the Greater Moncton area we are seeing that growth and it is reflecting in our building permits,” said Luc Babineau, director of economic development with the City of Moncton.
Institutional and government projects accounted for 60 per cent (or $120.6 million) of the total permits issued in the first three months of 2025. There were also 111 residential permits and 37 commercial and industrial permits issued.
According to Statistic Canada, Moncton remains one of the fastest growing census metropolitan areas in the country with the population growing from 178,599 in 2023 to 188,036 in 2024.
Moncton itself saw a population rise of 7.1 per cent from July 2023 to July 2024 and now has 97,523 residents.
“The city is growing. We are prospering and it is creating vibrancy in our downtown as well. With all these permits it will also mean an increase in jobs and opportunities in the construction centre as well,” said Babineau.
