HALIFAX -- The Nova Scotia government is promising financial help for people who have to replace their oil tanks or septic systems.
Starting next spring, the government says it will make $1.5 million available by expanding its environmental home assessment program.
Depending on income, homeowners could receive up to $1,000 to purchase an oil tank.
Homeowners with septic problems could be eligible for up to $3,000 to replace or repair their systems.
Environment Minister Sterling Belliveau says the government is making the money available because some families are choosing between replacing their oil tanks and putting food on the table.
The government says there are about 200,000 domestic oil tanks in the province, and about 45 per cent of homes use septic systems.
