A 12-year-old girl struck in a Dartmouth crosswalk says she wants the driver involved in the incident to do the right thing and turn himself in.
Police responded to the collision at the intersection of Akerley Boulevard and Windmill Road shortly after 3 p.m.
They say the girl was crossing Akerley Boulevard in a marked crosswalk with her mother when she was hit by a vehicle turning right from Akerley Boulevard onto Windmill Road.
Sarah Acker says the lights were flashing a walk signal and that she was hit just after she stepped off the curb.
“I was walking straight and he hit my side and I went like this and he hit me here and I felt very sick,” says Sarah.
“I turned around and her hands are coming off the hood of the car and I said something to him and he opens up his door to check on her and instead he says ‘sorry’ and closes the door and he continues to turn right,” says her mother, Christa Acker.
Police say the driver was seen leaving the area towards Sackville on Magazine Hill.
Sarah Acker was taken to the IWK Health Centre with non-life-threatening injuries.
Her mom says no one else at the busy intersection stopped to help, so she called police and provided a description of the man and his vehicle.
“He’s thin, not a big guy, between 35 and 45 with short, dark hair and a moustache,” says Christa Acker.
She hopes he does the right thing and turns himself in.
“I am very upset because I thought he was going to come out and do the right thing when he opened up his door and he didn’t,” she says. “I was waving for him and waiting for him to come back and he still didn’t come back.”
“He didn’t even bother to come over to me and check on me and say ‘oh my God, I am so sorry,’” says Sarah Acker.
She says she is OK, but she wants the man to come forward. Police are gathering video footage from the intersection to help with their investigation.
The man was driving a four-door silver Hyundai.
