How much can one man's appearance change, after three years of run-ins with the American criminal justice system?
Quite a bit, based on these mugshots of Matthew J. Medlin, a U.S. man who's had frequent encounters with police in Oregon's Multnomah County.
His latest encounter was a meth-fuelled standoff at a railyard in Portland, where he allegedly climbed into a dumpster-like rail car and refused to come out for four hours, while a storm drenched him in rain and pelted him with hail. Police say he was trying to use rocks and bits of metal as weapons, and was generally uncooperative with law enforcement.
Medlin allegedly injected himself with more meth at one point during the standoff, police said.
The encounter ended with police using non-lethal rounds and Tasers to subdue the suspect.
The 32-year-old was booked at the Multnomah County Jail later in the day, where he posed for his latest mugshot.
Multnomah County now has eight of his mugshots on file, dating back to Jan. 7, 2013.
In the earliest photograph, Medlin has a light beard and short, dark hair. He also has large and pointy eyebrow tattoos, as well as teardrop tattoos on both cheeks.
His appearance remains much the same in the next two mug shots, dated Feb. 16 and March 7, 2013. But in the fourth photo, dated Mar. 30, 2013, he is shown with black lines painted on his face. Vertical lines run down from his hairline, across his eyes and to his chin, and several horizon lines are drawn under his eyes and on his cheeks. His hair is also buzzed extremely short.
The face paint is gone by the time mugshot No. 5 is taken, on July 20, 2013. In the fifth photo, Medlin's hair has grown to about an inch-and-a-half long on top, and he's dyed segments of it blonde.
The sixth photo shows him with a shaved head, on Apr. 30, 2014.
Medlin had no more encounters with the Multnomah County photographer until Dec. 8, 2015, when he displayed his most radical change yet. In mugshot No. 7, he is shown with a goatee, a drawn face, and shoulder-length, scraggly black hair.
In his latest mugshot, Medlin looks much like he did in December of 2015, though with a wound on one cheek. His eyes are closed in the photo.
According to the Multnomah County police, Medlin was charged with two counts of trespassing, two counts of criminal mischief, two counts of resisting arrest and one count each of interfering with a peace officer, disorderly conduct and violating his parole.
Most of Medlin's previous mugshots were taken after arrests for parole violations.
However, the one taken Apr. 30, 2014 came after Medlin escaped from jail and was found at a Jack in the Box restaurant a few kilometres from the facility. Medlin's escape came just six days before he was scheduled to be released.
Medlin has had numerous run-ins with the law, dating back to before he turned 18. He is a convicted sex offender, and has also been found guilty of assault, burglary and unauthorized use of a vehicle, among other charges.
