HALIFAX -- Voters are headed to the polls today for a byelection in the Nova Scotia riding of Halifax-Needham.

The area has been an NDP stronghold for years under former cabinet minister and party leader Maureen MacDonald.

MacDonald announced in April she was retiring after serving as a member of the legislature for 18 years.

The candidates are Progressive Conservative Andy Arsenault, Lisa Roberts of the NDP, the Green party's Thomas Trappenberg, and Liberal Rod Wilson.

Elections Nova Scotia says 1,468 people have already cast ballots through early voting methods, down from 1,831 in 2013.

The polls are open until 8 p.m.
