A fire that started on the couch of a single-family house in Kinburn Thursday morning has reduced the home to rubble and left its two residents with smoke inhalation injuries, according to Ottawa Fire Services.

Firefighters say they received a call just before 6:30 a.m. from a resident, reporting a fire in their home located in the 4000 block of Loggers Way.

When crews were on their way and saw “billowing black smoke in the area” they requested additional resources to the scene.

Upon arrival, firefighters found the two residents of the two-storey home waiting outside. The two residents were treated for smoke inhalation and taken to hospital in non-life-threatening condition.

As the home was fully engulfed by smoke and flames on both sides by the time crews arrived at the scene, “firefighters were not able to make entry to the home and had to establish a defensive attack from the exterior.”

Since the fire happened in an area of the city with no hydrants, firefighters brought water to the scene from a water source.

“Propane tanks on the side of the home created a hazard on scene for firefighters. Firefighters kept a hose line on the propane tanks to keep them cool until they were able to shut them off,” Ottawa Fire Services said in a post on X.

After nearly two hours, the fire was declared under control.

Debris was moved by an excavator “to extinguish hot spots.”

The two residents did not require help from Victim Services, as they had a place to stay.

The investigation into what led to the fire is ongoing.
