Sudbury police, OPP crackdown results 64 charges from 42 commercial vehicle stops

A two-day joint enforcement initiative targeting commercial motor vehicles in Greater Sudbury resulted in dozens of charges and several vehicles being taken off the road.

The Greater Sudbury Police Service conducted the blitz on Feb. 3-4 in partnership with the Ontario Provincial Police and Ministry of Transportation commercial motor vehicle inspectors.

Enforcement blitz

“Officers conducted enforcement in the Kingsway/Barry Downe and Falconbridge areas, as well as in Azilda and Chelmsford,” police said in a social media post.

During the operation, authorities made 42 commercial motor vehicle stops and conducted 21 detailed Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance Level 1 inspections.

Of those inspected, six vehicles were placed out of service and three were deemed unfit motor vehicles, resulting in their licence plates being removed.

Charges laid

Authorities laid a total of 64 charges related to commercial motor vehicle violations. The charges included a range of offences uncovered during the inspections, such as:

• failing to display inspection sticker or provide proof of inspection,
• driving a commercial motor vehicle without a required annual inspection,
• failing to carry a valid inspection schedule,
• operating a commercial motor vehicle with no valid commercial vehicle operator’s registration certificate,
• failing to accurately complete a daily inspection,
• travelling with an insecure load,
• operating overweight on a single axle and
• other overweight and permit violations.

Police said the inspections also uncovered other defects – including inoperative brakes, loose fasteners and emissions violations.

Additional Offences

The enforcement effort also resulted in 15 charges against non-commercial vehicles in the areas of the blitz.

These charges included offences for driving without insurance, failing to surrender a driver’s licence or vehicle permit, speeding, failing to stop at a red light and one open liquor offence.

Two non-commercial drivers were also found to be suspended at the time they were stopped.
