Police looking for driver that hit North Bay crossing guard

A crossing guard received minor injuries earlier this month in a hit-and-run incident in North Bay.

In a news release May 28, police said the collision took place more than a week ago -- May 20.

“At approximately 8:45 a.m., a crossing guard was struck near the intersection of Prince Edward Drive and Summit Drive,” police said.

“The driver failed to remain at the scene, and the victim was unable to provide investigators with information that could assist in identifying the vehicle or driver involved.”

Looking for video recordings

Police are hoping that someone remembers seeing something or may still have dashcam, security or cellphone footage from the area that could help with the investigation.

“Crossing guards play a vital role in protecting children and supporting safe school routes throughout the community,” police said.

“Drivers are required by law to obey crossing guards and stop immediately when a stop sign is displayed.”

Under the law, drivers must stop for crossing guards and not resume driving until pedestrians and the crossing guard have cleared the roadway.

“Failing to obey a crossing guard can result in a $730 fine in a community safety zone and four demerit points, with a maximum penalty of a $1,000 fine and four demerit points,” police said.

“Drivers involved in incidents of this nature could also face Criminal Code charges, including dangerous (driving) and failure to stop after an accident.”

If you see a driver disobey a crossing guard, police are urging residents to try to record the vehicle’s plate number, make, colour and model of the vehicle and a description of the driver.
