It could be a messy commute Monday morning for many drivers in eastern Canada, now that winter weather has arrived.

Environment Canada has issued snowfall and snow squall warnings for much of eastern Ontario and western Quebec, including three of the nation’s largest cities.

The Ottawa area received more than 10 cm on Sunday, and was expected to get up to 25 cm by Monday morning. Environment Canada has recommended extra caution while driving in the capital.

Montreal is also facing the possibility snowy roads just in time for the start of the work week. The metro area is expected to get between five and 10 centimetres of the white stuff by Monday evening.

In Toronto, temperatures are hovering around the freezing mark, meaning snow that fell Sunday could turn to ice and make roads slippery there too on Monday morning.
