GATINEAU, Que. -- No charges will be laid in a kitchen fire that claimed the lives of 12-year-old twins in Gatineau, Que., police said Monday.

Firefighters found the siblings unconscious on the floor of a burning apartment on Marengere Street) at about 11 p.m. on Saturday after neighbours tipped them off that someone might be inside, police spokesman Jean-Paul Lemay said.

Lemay said the pair were given CPR and taken to hospital, where they died Sunday evening.

The children were alone in the apartment when the fire broke out, but investigators have ruled out any negligent behaviour.

He called the incident a tragic and unfortunate accident.
