An Ontario man in his 60s is facing several charges after being pulled over while driving a van without doors, windows and licence plates.
The driver was pulled over on Queenston Street in St. Catharines, Ont. at 10 a.m. on Monday, during a distracted driving enforcement exercise.
Niagara Regional Police were monitoring traffic when an officer's attention was drawn to an unplated green 2000 Dodge Caravan. As the vehicle approached, the officer noticed it had no sliding side doors, the rear windows were missing and several items were sticking out of the open doors.
A wooden stool was strapped to the van's roof, and a triangular slow moving vehicle sign was tied across the back of the van where the licence plate should have been.
Police stopped the vehicle, and said its 66-year-old driver told them his licence was suspended. There was also no insurance on the van.
Upon investigation, police realized the man had been stopped driving the same vehicle on the same road in neighbouring Fort Erie two weeks earlier.
As a result of the incident, the driver has been charged with driving while under suspension, operating a motor vehicle without insurance, driving a motor vehicle without licence plates and failing to surrender a permit for the vehicle.
He is also charged with failure to apply for an ownership permit, operating an unsafe vehicle and prohibited use of a slow moving vehicle sign.
