A tractor-trailer loaded with cinnamon buns was destroyed by a fire in southwestern Ontario early Sunday morning.
The driver managed to pull over to the side of Hwy. 401 near Drumbo, Ont., at about 10 a.m. He wasn’t injured, but not much remains of the cab, which was burned down to bare metal and tire rims.
The load he was hauling for baked goods chain Cinnabon spilled from the burned trailer onto the road, leaving a charred, sticky, sweet mess on the asphalt.
Dave Caldwell lives near the stretch of highway where the fire took place. He and his daughter say they heard several loud explosions.
“There was probably four of them that went off. (There was) black smoke billowing out like you wouldn't believe,” he said. Caldwell and his daughter initially thought a neighbour’s house had caught fire.
Police at the scene said the fire was caused by an electrical malfunction. Drumbo Fire station chief Kevin Harmer said wind pushed the flames back into the rest of the truck. Emergency crews battled the blaze for over an hour.
Heavy equipment was brought in to remove what remained of the truck. Traffic was brought to a standstill for hours.
