A B.C. man wasted no time in making some pretty large purchases after winning the largest online jackpot in Canadian history.

Bill Laharty, of Nanaimo, B.C. was in Vancouver on Thursday to pick up his $21-million cheque after winning Saturday’s Lotto 649 draw.

“I’ve already bought a couple of cars,” Laharty told reporters gathered for the cheque ceremony. “I haven’t paid for them yet, but I’ve bought them.”

One of those cars – a BMW – went to his best friend of 25 years.

Now a multimillionaire, Laharty says he has more plans to help out family and friends. He also wants to travel to Bora Bora, buy a new condo and a bigger boat.

Laharty said his win is life-changing.

“It not only changes my life, it changes my family’s life, my friends’ lives,” Laharty said. “It’s a lot of money.

“It’s more money than I’m ever going to need, so it’s an awesome thing.”

Laharty bought his ticket on B.C. gaming website PlayNow.com.

It’s not the first time a lottery record has been set in Nanaimo. In 2010, a Harbour City resident also won Canada’s previous biggest online jackpot of $7.6 million.
